Project AWARE Specialty

What You Learn

Project AWARE Foundation is the scuba diving industry’s leading nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to conserving the aquatic environment through education, advocacy and action. Besides completing the Project AWARE Specialty course, you can become a partner in the efforts to preserve the underwater environment.

You learn about:

• The ocean commons and coastal zone issues

• Fisheries challenges and sustainability

• Coral environment overview and inhabitants

• The role of the scuba diver in protecting aquatic environments

The pictures are taken during one of the many underwater clean up events I organize each year on Chaweng Beach on Koh Samui, in conjunction with the THA (Thai Hotel Association) chapter Koh Samui.

The clean up dives along Chaweng beach are a good sample of human underwater pollution. It's a good case study and shows how much is lost or discarded on a busy beach like Chaweng Beach. During each clean up we find many personal items that have been lost, like clothing, sun glasses, glass and plastic bottles. We also find more 'commercial' items, like plastic beach chairs and tarp with advertisement on it, just to name a few.

We need to take responsibility and the best start is at your own doorstep!
